THE OLD NEW SCHOOL
30 August 2008
“Kids today… What with the internets and fixer-bike chat rooms; and talk of cycling (with actually little REAL time spent in the saddle). Things just somehow aren’t like they used to be.”
Enter the Old New School:
Robert was the first person to ride at HELLYER VELODROME in San Jose. He balked at the wimpy-man gearing of 71.8″ that is on the Merckx saying that he usually ran somewhere on the order of 88.0″… His list of past bikes owned was an enviable one: a Colnago, a De Rosa, a Le Jeune…

Prior to test-riding what is now his new track bike, he mentioned he wanted to get his leather construction glove out of the car (by hooking his thumb around the head tube palm down, he could use a gloved hand as a ‘brake’ with which to stop–this method was popular in the 1920’s)!

I’m so happy to know that the Merckx will be going to such a great (arrospoke free) home!!!
