CERN: Go Live

10 September 2008

Today at 9:30am (Swiss Time), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built was turned on for its first test. The machine, which cost more than 5 billion pounds, is a 17-mile loop that supports two streams of protons running in opposite directions, aimed at one another to collide at light speed, recreating attributes of the big bang and helping scientists to learn more about the origins of mass, gravity and dark matter… the “glue” thought to hold the universe together.
