One of my favorite artists ever is the enigmatic video artist Bas Jan Ader, who died tragically at sea, while attempting to sail from America to Amsterdam in a single passenger sail boat, in order to attend an opening there. The voyage was part of the exhibit, a triptych he had conceived entitled “In Search Of The Miraculous”. It is unknown if his death was an intended part of the work. Surely the risk alone provided the possibility of several outcomes.
I have collected many books that contain stills from his videos as well as other works he did, some drawings, photos, and a series of photos he took one night walking the streets of Los Angeles with a flashlight, based on the lyrics to The Coasters song “Searchin’”. This was the first part of the triptych. The third was allegedly meant to be a similar night time walk, through the streets of Amsterdam, after he arrived.
This book Please Don’t Leave Me, is finally back in print and highly recommended.
Here are a few short films of Bas Jan Ader, to give a sample of his enigmatic and compelling work.
*I ALSO JUST DISCOVERED SOMETHING A LITTLE EERIE…..I DID A SEARCH FOR BAS JAN ADER ON INTELLIGENCE AFTER POSTING AND FOUND THAT SCOTT A. SANT’ANGELO POSTED ON BAS JAN ADER EXACTLY ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, NOVEMBER 11…..
