A Room with No Echo

2 November 2009

For those not already familiar with anechoic chambers (I admit I was not until yesterday), they are rather large rooms that are constructed in such a manner that there are no echoes or reverberation. More commonly recognized for acoustic purposes, where reflections that normally affect frequency response can be avoided, anechoic chambers are also useful for Radio Frequency testing as well…which is how Mcintosh Laboratories tested their world famous audio equipment. Nerd out on this story about how they built the chamber back in 1979.

The U.S Airforce at Edwards Airforce Base in the Mojave Desert of California also uses anechoic chambers as a controlled electromagnetic environment for testing their planes.  BMW used this chamber to test levels of magnetic interference 530i, 545i, and the 645i.
