Mareen Fischinger.
20 December 2009

I had a chance to meet Mareen Fischinger last week while she was in Berlin showing her book at a number of studios and agencies. A very talented young photographer, she has an impressive portfolio with content ranging from fashion, editorial and lifestyle to her thesis on Staged Photography. One project of hers, ‘Panography,’ will have an opening in Paris on the 18th of February at the Galerie Bailly Contemporain. I expect to see a lot more of her in the future.
Color Magazine presents
18 December 2009

a trailer to an adventure by some of the most amazing skateboarders traveling New Zealand by bike. Pretty excited to see this, and they already have some interesting comments by the actual skateboarders on cycling. I know how I feel after riding 160km a day, and then to try and skate as well??? This should be a good one.

Every kid that was into BMX in the 80’s had their house brand they were proud of. Hutch, Kuwahara, CW, GT, Patterson, Powerlite, SE, Redline, and through all the regional brands around the world. As a kid I had a soft spot for JMC. Jeff Venekamp was our local hero, and he was co-factory for this small brand. In the late 90’s to current, 30 and 40 year old men dove in to recreate their ship in a bottle from childhood. Ebay and other forums organized communities, and many nice restored bikes were re-born from this. Take a look at one seller offering most all the models from JMC of the era. Really amazing to see these all at once. Pick up a Darrell Young for Christmas!

Steven Brock: Bicycles of Florence
2 December 2009

Last night my wife brought home a one off photo book of her students parent who is a photogapher. His father compiled a 250 page hand made book of all the bicycles he saw on a trip to florence. Holding this 9 lb, one of kind portfolio reminded me of perceived value. If this book was one of 5000 copies on the book store shelf, it may blend in with the others, but to know it was hand printed, hand bound, and one exists, just brought this whole other level of importance. Only one viewer at a time. Then I thought that would be a really nice website formula. To set up a server to only allow one viewer at a time would add importance to the online experience. Naa, back to too much info, too fast, and on to the next.

Andy Messerschmidt: New Works

I love these new paintings by Andy Messerschmidt. They all contain a kind of complexity that allow us to swim through them.

SF Bike Expo 2009
23 November 2009

I will be camping here for the next 6 weeks if you need me.

Here are a few photos from the cross race that was set up in the parking lot. Several SF faces having a good time in the dirt and on the street. It’s the supermoto of the cycling world.

Walton hopped in and did some laps with rainier.

Rainier crossed the finish, with his bag by the gate, took off straight for work. Non-pro sport trumps the pros for inspiration any day.

Here is a photo of a bar / stem ko engraved for me in 2006. Boo first showed me Ko’s art on his bike, and was floored. After all the bike themed art came up, it’s safe to say his will stand the test of time.

De La Paz Roasterie
11 November 2009

Recently Garrett and I shot photos at SF’s most cycling friendly roaster De La Paz. Jason’s roasterie is in the heart of the mission, and is coming up as the hometown favorite. He also shares a space with Chuey, so check in for a cap and a cup!
De La Paz Coffee is a small batch coffee roasting company that focuses on freshness and great tasting coffee. Our goal is to change the way people think about coffee. Whether that means learning more about the small farmer and his family or understanding the difference between an espresso grind or press pot grind, we want our customers to think of coffee as more than just a bag on the shelf. Welcome to the De La Paz experience.

Dustin Curtis vs. American Airlines.
10 November 2009

I first caught this exchange when the first letter and response was given back in May, from Dustin Curtis regarding the User Interface design of their home page after booking a flight through them. While I think the original was a bit extreme in tone, later adjusted pending a response from ‘Mister X’ who worked on the design staff for AA, Mr. Curtis did offer up a quick redesign which shows this was not quite the normal off the cuff rant via web. Since then things have unfurled quite horribly, and Mr. Curtis is back with another post updating the situation and the fate of ‘Mister X’. What shocks me most is the inability of AA to handle this situation in what I would call a decent manner. I would like to say its the problem with corporations, profit before service mentality, but I am not able to speak on authoritavely on such a topic, being just a designer who likes to ride bikes. However, I do know that I do not plan on traveling AA anytime soon and would rather spend my time on airlines like Virgin that seem to ‘get it’.
