Wonderful photographs of the unlikeliest of subjects: cell phone towers.
“In her photo series Nature Calls, she documents the eerie assimilation of technology in nature. You’ve no doubt seen them dotting the byways—trees that are a bit askew from their companions, slightly greener, a little less organic…just a tad too, well, perfect.”

Look closely, though, and you’ll see the telltale mechanical bits—antennae, junction boxes, wires—peeking through the artificial foliage. Shur chose to approach her subject through the lens of classic landscape photography, because to her, it’s now life as we know it. “These cell phone towers,” she says, “have become the new classic landscape.”

History of Goyard in Print
26 July 2010
The book includes the history of the Goyard family — the achievements during the Paris Expo Universelle in 1900 and the creation of the noble facade of the Paris store. But it is more generally about the art of travel and its blossoming in the 20th century from early trains to grand hotels.

Every piece of its construction, over a period of 10 years, is an ode to artisans: handmade paper cajoled from the rare remaining manufacturers in France, and depth of print from traditional technique — you cannot, will not and should not read this delicately created tome on a Kindle or an iPad. “The book is about sight, sound, smell, touch,” says Pierre Tzenkoff, the book’s creator.

Destined not just to capture the house’s near 150-year heritage, the book, which will be donated to France’s Bibliothèque Nationale, is a mission statement. “It would be so sad to let it die,” says Mr. Signoles, referring to the house of Goyard. But it might equally be a comment on the precious legacy of the printed word.

“After the bright, brash, and noisy swinging 60′s, people were hoping for a nice quiet 70′s. But fortunately the Italians had other ideas.”

The Two Escobars
22 June 2010
I recently attended a screening of the film The Two Escobars during The Los Angeles Film Fest.
With the World Cup in full swing, the timing was perfect. From the official website:
While rival drug cartels warred in the streets and the country’s murder rate climbed to highest in the world, the Colombian national soccer team set out to blaze a new image for their country. What followed was a mysteriously rapid rise to glory, as the team catapulted out of decades of obscurity to become one of the best teams in the world. Central to this success were two men named Escobar: Andrés, the captain and poster child of the National Team, and Pablo, the infamous drug baron who pioneered the phenomenon known in the underworld as “Narco-soccer.” But just when Colombia was expected to win the 1994 World Cup and transform its international image, the shocking murder of Andres Escobar dashed the hopes of a nation.
Through the glory and the tragedy, The Two Escobars daringly investigates the secret marriage of crime and sport, and uncovers the surprising connections between the murders of Andres and Pablo.
