  • Friends and their wheels / pt.28: Olivier Zahm

Reported by Yorgo Tloupas, 1 July 2011, 09:34 AM

Last night I bumped into Olivier Zahm on his customized Triumph Thruxton “OZ Edition”. Olivier has always been a motorbike fan, and I remember him, years ago, looking menacing and scruffy on his various retro bikes. Now he looks rather refined and elegant on this compact beauty, put together for him by ATS.

    Nice personal touch:

… but shame about the font

    Sounded good too:

  • Public Domaine at La Gaité Lyrique

Reported by Yorgo Tloupas, 21 June 2011, 02:51 AM

On Saturday I attended the launch of Public Domaine, a fantastic exhibition at La Gaité Lyrique, in Paris. To my knowledge, this is the first proper show about skateboard culture, and I have to congratulate my friends Pedro Winter and Morgan Bouvant for co-curating it. The multi-floor exhibit really does justice to the thriving and vibrant mix of talent that can be found amongst skateboarders, and I felt proud of having grown up within that community.

    Classic images on display:

Boards are shown with a text explaining their history:

    Ill studio‘s giant ball bearing:

    Lance Mountain‘s mini pools:

Fred Mortagne‘s wall of blank boards used as a screen:

And my favorite piece, an animated video by Natas Kaupas, showing legendary board graphics becoming alive:

There is much more to see out there, so pay a visit this summer if you’re in Paris!

  • Art = Bag

Reported by Yorgo Tloupas, 14 June 2011, 05:13 AM

In Venice, Basel, or Miami, no art fair attendee would be seen without a tote bag hanging from his/her shoulder. They are everywhere, and a sure sign that the person looking like a homeless vagrant sitting on a bench is in fact an art critic..

  • Julian Schnabel Maybach in Venice

Reported by Yorgo Tloupas, 10 June 2011, 03:16 AM

Last week I was in Venice for the Biennale, and was invited by Maybach to see a car Julian Schnabel has designed in collaboration with his protégé Vahakn Arslanian. The art piece is called “The Ones You Didn’t Write – The Maybach Car”, and stood out radically in a car-less city, moored on the Grand Canal.

This is a test car that has previously been shot at, then painted by Mr. Schnabel.

Inside the windows are drawings by Vahakn Arslanian.

Julian Schnabel always rocks a good style:

We also had a dinner in the somptuous Palazzo Polignac. My friend Lola Schnabel was proud to have her name painted on the car.

Look out for an in-depth interview with Julian Schnabel in the next issue of Intersection Magazine.

  • 2011 French Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships

Reported by Yorgo Tloupas, 30 May 2011, 16:56 PM

What a difference a year makes… last year my team, Apologies, won the first ever French Harcourt Bike Polo Championships. This year the number of teams more than doubled (32), one of our team members left us, and the average level rose dramatically.

The competition was held in hot and sunny Toulouse:

The courts were OK, but a bit rough and ramshackle to my liking:

My team mates Louis David and Jean-François sharing a very refined dinner courtesy of Domino’s Pizza:

Which may explain why after a first day during which we won all our games, we ended up 8th overall at the end of the second and final day… but at least we qualified for the Euros in Barcelona!
